During the Battle of the Somme, the Newfoundlanders were about to take a major ravin on the morning of 01 JULY 1916. At the same time, explosives had been placed under the German positions which only served to wake them up and alert them that the Newfoundlanders were coming. Of the 869 in the regiment, only 68 answered the role call the next day.
